Beyond The Beach

Supporting the engagement and inclusion of rural and island youth through the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

Findings

The partner organizations of the project (Patrimoine Vivant de Marie-Galante, Emanciper Mayotte, and Solidarity Tracks Greece – Lefkas) are located in some of the most frequented tourist sites due to their rich cultural heritage and biodiversity.

However, beyond the beaches and landscapes, these island regions are home to a young population that is among the most affected by record unemployment rates for youth aged 16 to 25.

Yet, the cultural and natural heritage sector has significant potential for creating jobs for NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth in rural and island areas. These untapped job opportunities remain challenging to realize due to a lack of awareness about activity and employment creation opportunities and the specific needs of these territories in terms of promoting intangible cultural heritage.

Objectives

The Beyond the Beach project aims to promote the economic valorization of Intangible and Natural Cultural Heritage as a tool for social and professional inclusion. The project seeks to develop the engagement and social entrepreneurship of young people, encouraging them to remain in rural and island areas. Beyond the Beach is co-funded by the Erasmus Youth and Sport program. Erasmus Jeunesse et Sport.
