L’association Patrimoine Vivant de Marie Galante…
It was founded in 2015 by a collective in response to the urgent need to preserve, collect, enhance, and pass on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), which is at risk of disappearing due to a lack of concrete engagement measures.
Our action is focused on:
– Scientific research (ICH inventory sheets, networking within the French overseas departments, etc.)
– Citizen action through the provision and organization of workshops to transmit the skills and knowledge held by the “experts.”
Gradually, our actions have been enriched by activities aimed at promoting access to culture for all, particularly for those who are distant from cultural and leisure activities.
Through awareness workshops, we use intangible and natural cultural heritage as a lever for social inclusion for young people in rural and island communities who are seeking a sense of identity.
Our Mission
Sauvegarder, valoriser et transmettre le patrimoine culturel de nos territoires, menacé par l’oubli et la disparition.
Nous agissons avec détermination, mêlant recherche scientifique et action citoyenne pour préserver notre héritage et le partager avec le monde.

What exactly is Intangible Cultural Heritage?
According to Article 2 of the 2003 Convention, Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) includes “the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills—as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts, and cultural spaces associated with them—that communities, groups, and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.”
This living heritage, passed down from generation to generation, “is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature, and their history, providing them with a sense of identity and continuity.”
Far from being static, it is therefore both traditional, contemporary… and very much alive!
This intangible heritage is expressed particularly through oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe, as well as skills related to traditional craftsmanship (Article 2).
The Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage has been ratified by 180 states (as of July 27, 2020), including France in 2006.
